Now let us enter the chapel of the Sacred Heart of Mary. As we circulate through the chapel, please refrain from using your cell phone.
Situated in the innermost point of the cathedral, this magnificent chapel assumes a small Latin cruciform. It is dedicated to the patron saint of Ecuador, the Virgin Mary.
This chapel was completed on December 12, 1909, and was thereafter officially consecrated as a national sanctuary. Proposed by Father Matovelle, the chapel commemorates the consecration of Ecuador to the Sacred Heart of Mary.
Now let us move inside the chapel.
In the center is a dome filled with beautifully elaborate features.
Thirteen stained glass windows fill the space by lighting it with flowing colors. Collectively, the windows depict key scenes in the life of the Virgin Mary, from the Immaculate Conception to the Coronation.
At the very top of the altar stands the central figure of the chapel, the sacred heart of Mary. Meticulously carved from solid wood, the figure was sculpted in a renowned workshop in Barcelona, Spain.
The Virgin Mary stands above a host of winged angels. With a compassionate gaze and open hands, the figure assumes a benevolent pose as if ever ready to embrace the faithful. Indeed, her heart is depicted as a refuge and a symbol of love.
On either side of the altar are wooden statues of Saint Joseph and Saint Mariana de Jesus, respectively, carved by the Alvarado brothers of Cuenca.
At the innermost end of the passage is a statue of Our Lady of Guadelupe. Aside her are small reliquaries representing various Marian devotional traditions from Central and South America.
This concludes our guide to the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Mary.
